History should be about the lives and human experiences that have shaped our past, present, and future. Many students struggle to make the connection that the great men and women of the past were human. They struggled with spouses, their peers, and had their own insecurities. Without a doubt George Washington was a great man. Washington’s self-less service to this nation set America on its course. With that said, Washington struggled with his own humanity. He was incredibly self-conscious about his lack of education. He preferred to let more articulate men take to the stump and make the great speeches. Washington was an ardent reader of the genre of books most commonly referred to as self-help books. He set himself on a life long journey of self-improvement due mostly to his own doubt. He worried incessantly about what people thought about him. He was a devoted husband, but may have carried a life-long torch of the wife of his friend. Washington was continuously short on cash and sometimes struggled to pay his bills. Without the increased British taxes of the late 1760s and early 1770s, he may never have become a revolutionary hero. It appears the new taxes certainly sparked his revolutionary spark not so much for a desire to form a new nation but instead as way to improve his cash flow.
